Bicycle Saddles Examined and Explained

Brooks Bicycle Saddles

Almost without any risk of argument or challenge one can say that Brooks bicycle saddles are the most famous and the most popular saddles in the world. They have been manufactured since 1878 and have essentially been made to the same high standard and attention to detail throughout that entire time.

Brooks saddles are notable for the leather cover with which they are made. Although the seat gives the impression that it will be hard and uncomfortable to sit on, for most people the truth is quite the opposite and they are considered the most comfortable.

It is true that Brooks saddles require a little bit of time to be broken in and this involves sitting and riding on them over a number of miles. The leather tends to soften and shape itself to the contours of the backside that makes contact with it mile after mile. We hear a lot about the sit bone and the comfort that is critical to a rider and it is this feature of these saddles that has proven to be very important in the acceptance of these saddles. In short they minimize the pressure on the sit bones making it more comfortable to use.

It is the beauty and handcrafted workmanship that went into every model of Brooks saddle that was admired and respected by cyclists everywhere. The continuing of the traditional techniques through the years has maintained the success of the company and the saddles are still in high demand today.

The range of Brooks saddles is incredibly large and choosing a particular saddle out of the long list of saddle models (more than 50 in total) can be a daunting task. We aim to provide you with some guidance and insight into as many of the Brooks saddles as possible with details and reviews that should highlight their features as well as the type of cycling that each saddle is best suited to. Not only that it should become clear what type of cyclist is most suited to each type of saddle as well.

According to Brooks the saddles can be broken down into three specific categories so we will present them in those categories too. The three categories are Road & MTB, Touring & Trekking and City & Heavy Duty. Within these categories the saddles may also be placed into one of six lines: Select; Special; Unique; Classic; Imperial, and; Aged. Each of the Brooks lines are indicated as part of the saddle model name.
